Free books app

I love this app. It just makes sense. Organise and make available all the classics that are copyright free in one simple app. From Austen to Shakespeare this app offers a vast library of books, of which many are still studied in schools. Add the paid version and you have many examples of audio recordings too. 

Applications:

  1. The classics on tap. That's good for every teacher!
  2. Students can have digital version of classic texts being studied.
  3. Audio versions available for auditory learners at a small app upgrade cost.
  4.  Enrichment for students wanting to explore more texts from a particular author or related authors.

This App makes it easy to transfer any video file to your iPad and play it back flawlessly. As long as your laptop/desktop with the video file and iPad are connected to the same wireless network you ready to transfer away.

All you need is:

  • A wireless network

iTunes U...wow! The quality of content and their respective providers is phenomenal. Choose and area of study and you can find full courses here for free! Or just pick and choose from across a range of courses.

Applications:

  1. Personal interest! (read : professional development) Broaden your knowledge as a teacher in areas of expertise. Study from some of the best universities in the world for free.
  2. Extension for advanced students.
  3. Pick and choose to add quality media content to currently taught courses.
  4. Add content and use your skills and expertise to benefit others...now there's an idea!

6 of 100 - Scoreboard App


Scoreboard Apps clearly work for sport - especially when you consider the cost of dedicated scoreboards. However, they also work for any team based competition that can be enhanced by timing and scoring (i.e any class based learning game).

Applications:
  1. As a simple scoreboard in a sports hall with a projector (esp. if you have an Apple T.V attached)
  2. Class based team competitions in any subject where scoring and teams enhance engagement. 
  3. Teacher Vs Student revision activities
  4. Timed literacy/numeracy activities with score based progression.

The OCR app makes it easy to take an image of anything with text on it and convert it into an editable form.

Applications:

  1. Collecting articles from magazines and newspapers and editing them instantly.
  2. Collecting visual media in text form to import into a Google doc/ Word doc as a writing stimulus for students.
  3. Save time with paper samples of notes that no longer exist in digital form by photographing and converting.
  4. Sample effective writing from students on their typed papers to quickly share with students.

'Voice Record' is a simple and fantastic app that allows you to record quickly and get that audio content to the intended audience in a myriad of ways. Integrates well with Google Drive, Dropbox etc and can be quickly emailed to anyone you desire.

Applications:
  1. Teacher-led class discussion recorded and emailed to class at the conclusion of the lesson for review.
  2. Student-led discussion (after planning) submitted to express understanding of a concept.
  3. Teacher podcast for review purposes.
  4. Student talk recorded (pre/during/post class) for later review (peer & teacher).
  5. Interviews vox pop style on an opinion based topic.

Khan Academy App

The Khan Academy is a rich archive of teaching videos in a range subject areas. In addition to just viewing content, teachers can also enrol students in classes and track progress with built in quizzes and assessment tools.

Applications:
  1. Revision for home study.

  3. Use quizzes as informal assessment. 
  4. Extension assignments for advanced students.

1 of 100 - Editing images without an App.




So to start this App journey I begin without actually using an App. Basic image enhancements built into the iPad. A simple way to start : )
