'Appsgonefree' is a great app with a simple premise. Notifying you when paid apps become free. Apps regularly go through free phases (and sometime remain there for long periods) to drive interest or because their developers have progressed to other projects, or just feel a little altruistic. 

Applications:

1. Track educational apps for your class/school and jump on board if/when they are free.
2. Try out apps that you may not have purchased but are willing to try for free.
3. Recommend apps to others based on interest and/or expertise when they become free! How nice is that ; )
